How to become a live-selling host

Short answer

A live-selling host presents live streams that explain products, answer comments and invite viewers to buy. Start by mastering three products, practise a stream structure and record a five-to-ten-minute mock stream as a portfolio. Apply to clearly identified brands, shops or live studios, or stream on your own account once you meet platform requirements. On TikTok, going LIVE from your own account requires age 18+ and a minimum follower count.

Three meanings of “live host”

  • Live-selling host: presents streams that sell a brand’s or shop’s products on TikTok Shop, Shopee Live or other platforms. This guide covers this role.
  • The TikTok LIVE co-host or multi-guest feature: joining someone else’s stream. It is an app feature, not a job.
  • Hosts on gift-based entertainment live apps: income depends on viewer gifts and recruitment often runs through agencies. It is a different business model; read contracts and targets very carefully.

What a live-selling host does

Hosts explain product benefits and use, show details on camera, answer comments, state correct prices and promotions, and keep the stream flowing with an operator or admin. They follow the brand brief and never add unapproved claims.

Platform requirements to know

  • TikTok’s Indonesian Help Centre says going LIVE from your own account requires age 18+ and 1,000 followers, and requirements may vary by region. TikTok may also ask for age verification.
  • To sell other brands’ products on your own account you need to be a TikTok Shop affiliate. See the TikTok affiliate guide for full requirements.
  • TikTok Shop policy from June 2026 prohibits simulcasting (the same stream on TikTok Shop and another platform at once) and multicasting across several TikTok Shop accounts.
  • If you host on a brand’s or shop’s account, account eligibility is the owner’s responsibility. Ask about their internal rules before starting.

Starting from zero

  1. Step 1: Master three products

    Choose products you understand. Note function, materials, size, use, approved claims and common questions.

  2. Step 2: Practise voice and camera presence

    Speak clearly without rushing. Show products close to the camera in good light and repeat key information for new viewers.

  3. Step 3: Record a mock stream

    Record five to ten minutes like a real stream: greeting, demonstration, answering sample comments and a call to action. This becomes your first portfolio.

  4. Step 4: Prepare a host profile

    List product categories, languages, availability, your base, the mock stream and business contact.

  5. Step 5: Apply through clear channels

    Apply to brands, shops or live studios with a verifiable address and official contact. Get working hours, targets, breaks and payment terms in writing.

  6. Step 6: Review every stream

    Rewatch recordings where permitted. Note unanswered questions and when viewers left.

A sample 60-minute stream structure

  • Minutes 0–5: greet viewers, introduce yourself and the theme, explain promotions that actually apply.
  • Minutes 5–40: rotate product demonstrations, show details and answer comments by name.
  • Every 10–15 minutes: recap products for new viewers.
  • Minutes 40–55: answer pending questions and compare products honestly.
  • Minutes 55–60: summarise, explain how to buy and close politely.

How are live hosts paid?

Arrangements vary: hourly or per-session fees, monthly salaries for staff hosts and sometimes sales bonuses or commission. Figures differ by brand and city, so CariTalent does not publish pay ranges.

Your employment status determines your rights. Under Government Regulation 36/2021, hourly wages are only for part-time workers in an employment relationship and may not fall below the official formula based on monthly wages. Freelance or partner hosts are governed by their agreement, so ask for written terms stating status, pay, schedule and payment method. Self-employed workers can join BPJS Ketenagakerjaan as non-wage participants.

Product claims and disclosure

  • Cosmetics may only be promoted with a BPOM distribution licence. Never add exaggerated claims.
  • BPOM Regulation 7/2026 prohibits individuals or influencers from promoting or advertising medicines, except as a performer in an approved advertisement.
  • For financial products, OJK Regulation 6/2026 requires promoters to state their identity and relationship with a licensed financial institution.
  • Indonesia’s advertising code (Etika Pariwara Indonesia) asks that ads on personal social media be clearly identified as advertising.

Safer jobs and live agencies

  • Never pay registration, mandatory training or “deposit” fees to get hired.
  • Never lend your KTP or account to others; accounts and commissions are tied to the owner’s identity.
  • Beware gift targets, fines or long contracts not explained upfront, especially with entertainment-app live agencies.
  • Ask for the studio address, a named contact and a written contract before the first day.
