# How to become an event and wedding MC

**Short answer**

To become an MC, practise articulation and pace, learn to follow a running order and record a two-to-three-minute demo. Start with small occasions such as community meetings, birthdays or local events. Collect documentation and testimonials as a portfolio. Price by duration, preparation and event type, and agree terms in writing before the day.

## What does an MC do?

An MC (master of ceremonies) keeps an event on its running order. The job covers openings and closings, introducing speakers or performers, transitions, timekeeping and adapting when plans change. MCs also coordinate with organisers, wedding planners, sound and documentation teams.

An MC differs from a moderator, who leads a discussion, and a host, who usually presents entertainment or broadcast content. One person may do several of these, but the role should be agreed in advance.

## Types of events you can present

* Weddings: understand the ceremony and reception order, the customs the families follow and how family names are pronounced. Coordinate details with the wedding organiser.
* Religious gatherings: follow the committee’s order, use respectful language and honour local tradition. Present events whose traditions you understand.
* Formal and corporate events: learn the speech order, titles and guest protocol. A checked list prevents most name and title mistakes.
* Birthdays, gatherings and Independence Day community events: prepare games, keep energy up and protect participants, especially children at family events.
* Seminars and product launches: master the brief, never add product claims and protect speakers’ time.

## Practice steps from zero

1. ### Step 1: Train your voice and articulation

Read aloud for ten minutes a day. Record yourself and review pace, pauses and unclear words. Practise breathing so your voice stays steady without shouting.

2. ### Step 2: Learn to follow a running order

Use a running order from an event you attended or draft your own. Mark timings, performers, cues and segments that can be shortened if the event runs late.

3. ### Step 3: Write an opening and closing

Prepare formal and relaxed versions. A script keeps you calm, but deliver it in your own words with eye contact.

4. ### Step 4: Record a demo video

Record two to three minutes covering an opening, a transition and a close. This becomes your first portfolio sample for prospective clients.

5. ### Step 5: Take small bookings

Offer to present community, campus or family events. Ask permission to document them and request written testimonials.

6. ### Step 6: Prepare a profile and contact details

List event types, languages, your base and service area, demo video and business contact. Never claim clients or events you have not presented.

## Sample MC opening

> “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to \[event name\]. My name is \[name\], and I will be your host tonight. Before we begin, please set your phones to silent. We will open with \[first segment\].” Adapt greetings to the event and guests.

## How to set your MC rate

There is no single MC rate. Calculate from event duration, briefing and rehearsal, travel, required languages, script preparation, attire and extras such as games or auctions.

Put scope, schedule, deposit, final payment and cancellation terms in writing before accepting. Clients should also know what is excluded, such as sound equipment or writing the running order.

## On-the-day checklist

* Arrive early to check microphones, stage position and cues with the sound operator.
* Print the running order and a confirmed pronunciation list for names.
* Keep the event coordinator’s number and ask who approves schedule changes.
* Bring water and backup lines for unexpected pauses.

## Finding MC work safely

Legitimate offers do not ask you to pay registration, mandatory training or uniform fees to work. Ask for event details, venue and organiser contact, and confirm payment in writing. Use an event talent agreement template when helpful.

## Frequently asked questions

How do I become a good MC?

Master the running order, pronounce names and titles correctly, keep time and stay calm when plans change. Regular recorded practice improves pace, pauses and articulation.

Can I become an MC without experience?

Yes. Start with small events and a demo video, and describe your experience honestly. Clients assess your delivery samples, communication and preparation.

How much does a wedding MC earn?

There is no standard figure. Fees depend on duration, customs and languages, rehearsals, location and experience. CariTalent does not publish unsourced rates. Set your own rate from your time and costs.

What is the difference between an MC, host and moderator?

An MC runs the event to the running order. A moderator leads discussion and Q&A. A host usually presents entertainment, broadcasts or live streams. Agree the expected role before accepting.
